Winter tips
Winter Plumbing Tips to keep your pipes safe this winter! Follow these quick tips:
- Check for cold air coming in cracks where pipes are exposed. Insulate and seal those areas to prevent freezing.
- In extreme cold temperatures, let faucets run in a small stream to keep water moving. Open cabinet doors and cupboards where pipes are located to let the heat in.
- In extreme cold, turn the heat up in the home. 5 – 10 degrees can make a big difference.
- If living in a mobile home, make sure you have heat tape installed and check to make sure it’s working. Make sure the skirting is completely installed around the home, seal any holes or cracks. Close the heat vents to force the heat under floor to help keep pipes from freezing.
- If you go away for any amount of time during the winter, shut off the water to your home to minimize any damage should a pipe break. Winterize your home if you are leaving for the winter months.
- Never leave space heaters unattended.
- Know where your main shut-off valve is in case of emergencies.
